Donald J. Trump was a German-American businessman, media personality, and host of The Apprentice who was the 45th president of the United States. He became the president of his father's real estate business in 1971 and renamed it from the Fred Trump Organization to the Trump Organization. Trump and his businesses have been involved in more than 4,000 state and federal legal actions, including six bankruptcies. He was registered as a Republican in 1987, then a member of the Independence Party¹ in 1999, a Democrat in 2001, a Republican in 2009, unaffiliated in 2011, and a Republican in 2012.
Adolf Hitler was an Austrian-born German politician who was the dictator of Germany from 1933 to 1945. As the leader of the Nazi Party, he became Chancellor in 1933 and then assumed the title of Führer und Reichskanzler in 1934. During his dictatorship from 1933 to 1945, he initiated World War II in Europe by invading Poland on September 01, 1939, was closely involved in military operations throughout the war, and was central to the perpetuation of the Holocaust, the genocide of about 6 million Jews, and millions of other victims. He was a registered as a member of German Workers' Party (DAP) from 1919-1920 and the National Socialist German Workers' Party (NSDAP, known colloquially as the "Nazi Party") from 1920 - 1945.
Besides the obvious similarities regarding their hair, anger, and histrionic speeches, there are numerous others:
They both have a connection to Germany, though one is more German than the other:
Trump's paternal grandfather Friedrich Trump and grandmother Elisabeth were both born in Bavaria².
Hitler was born in Austria, to Austrian parents, but later moved to Germany.
Their surname was changed by an ancestor:
Trump was anglicized from Drumpft in the 1700s.
Hitler's father's name was changed from Hiedler.
They both had fathers who were mustachioed:
Fred Trump had a Toothbrush when he was younger and then switched to a Chevron.
Alois Hitler had a Hungarian.
They both partook in military-like service:
Trump was enrolled in the New York Military Academy, a private boarding school in upstate NY, and later received four draft deferments (1968-72).
Hitler voluntarily enlisted in the German Army immediately on the outbreak of WWI, served in combat, was wounded, and received the Iron Cross First Class and Iron Cross Second Class.
Note: Though Trump never did serve in combat, he did claim that his love life in the 70s was his own personal Vietnam:
"It’s amazing, I can’t even believe it. I’ve been so lucky in terms of that whole world. It is a dangerous world out there. It’s like Vietnam, sort of . . . It is my personal Vietnam. I feel like a great and very brave soldier!" - Trump, 1997
They both had a niece or nephew who worked actively to thwart their success:
Trump had a niece who wrote a best-selling book disparaging almost every facet of Trump's life:
Trump sent his brother to the hospital alone, on the night of his death.
Trump paid someone to take the SAT, on his behalf.
"Donald’s ego has been and is a fragile and inadequate barrier between him and the real world, which, thanks to his father’s money and power, he never had to negotiate by himself.”
Hitler had a half-nephew, William Patrick Hitler, that served in the U.S. Navy in WWII (and was wounded in combat like his half-uncle).
Note: After being discharged from the Navy, William changed his surname to "Stuart-Houston".
Prior to "assuming" power, they both "wrote" best-selling books:
Tony Shwartz wrote the Trump memoir and self-help book Trump: The Art of the Deal.
Hitler wrote Mein Kampf
Note: Mein Kampf did not have a photo of the author on the cover.
They both were born as Christians who once confirmed had a de minimus connection to organized religion:
Trump was born a Presbyterian, now considers himself to "be a non-denominational Christian” and hasn't regularly attended church for many years. When asked his favorite bible verse stated "I wouldn't want to get into it", later stated "an eye for an eye", was divorced twice and one of the few times he visited a church, he brought the incorrect bible.
“The only time Donald went to church was when the cameras were there,” Mary Trump quotes her aunt as saying. “It’s mind-boggling. But that’s all about his base. He has no principles. None!” (see 5. above)
Hitler was born a Catholic, who once confirmed never attended church again.
They both married women of Germanic descent late in life:
Trump married Melania Knavs, a Slovenian born in the Gottschee region Slovenia (a German-speaking area, once part of Austria), when he was 59.
Hitler married Eva Braun, who was born in Munich, when he was 56.
They both were addressed using the term "Heil":
Trump:
By his lawyer John Walter who clicked his heels while exclaiming "Heil, Hitler"³.
By members of the National Policy Institute while giving the Nazi salute and exclaiming, "Hail Trump, hail our people, hail victory!"
Hitler, by all Germans (and some others), who gave the Nazi salute while exclaiming "Heil, mein Führer!"
They both rigorously avoided public displays of affection or physical contact with their partners:
Trump: It is unknown why he avoided public displays of affection with his wife.
Hitler wished to present himself in the image of a chaste hero; in the Nazi ideology, men were the political leaders and warriors, and women were homemakers. He believed that he was sexually attractive to women and wished to exploit this for political gain by remaining single, as he felt marriage would decrease his appeal. - Albert Speer, Inside the Third Reich, p138.
He and Braun never appeared as a couple in public; the only time they appeared together in a published news photo was when she sat near him at the 1936 Winter Olympics. The German people were unaware of Braun's relationship with Hitler until after the war. - Heike Görtemaker, Eva Braun: Life with Hitler, p51.
When asked by a comrade if he had ever loved a girl, Hitler replied "I've never had time for anything like that, and I'll never get around to it."
They both were elected to the highest office in their respective countries without winning 50% of the popular vote:
Trump was elected president in 2016 with 46.1% of the vote (to Hillary Clinton's 48.2%).
Hitler was appointed Chancellor after the Nazi party obtained 33.1% of the vote (though this was the largest percentage of any of Germany's political parties).
They both started off their administration with a lie (See The Big Lie):
Trump: On January 21, 2017, which was the day after the inauguration and two days before his first official press conference, Sean Spicer made a statement to the press: he said that they had underestimated the size of the crowds for President Trump's inaugural ceremony. He claimed that the ceremony had drawn the "largest audience to ever to witness an inauguration, period – both in person and around the globe". - YouTube, Jan 21, 2021
But to anyone who can see soon realized, that claim was the first lie.
Hitler: "After Hitler was sworn in as Chancellor, Goebbels took over Germany's entire radio network. After a rousing speech from Goring, Goebbels interlaced 'vox pop' interviews with 'ordinary citizens'. The interviews, of course, were phony: the participants all being party members. In his first act as mouthpiece of the new regime, Goebbels was starting as he meant to continue . . . with a lie." - Anthoney Read, The Devil's Disciples, 2005, pg 276.
They both hid in a bunker during civil unrest:
Trump hid in the White House bunker while hundreds of protesters gathered outside after the murder of George Floyd.
Though according to Trump “It was a false report. I wasn’t down— I went down during the day and I was there for a tiny, little short period of time, and it was much more for an inspection . . . I’ve gone down two or three times, all for inspection." - Trump, The Slate, Jun 03, 2020
Hitler hid in the Führerbunker while Berlin was surrounded by 13 million Soviet troops, 6,250 tanks, 7,500 aircraft, and 41,600 artillery pieces.
They both left office significantly earlier than legally required:
Trump in 2021 (vs 2025).
Hitler in 1945 (vs. ?).
They both publicly derided the generals who they hired to work for them:
Trump derided his generals:
"I know more about ISIS than the generals do, believe me." Donald Trump, Nov 2016
Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis was "the world’s most overrated general" and "I didn’t like his 'leadership' style or much else about him, and many others agree."
Attorney General Jeff Sessions was "a disaster as attorney general. Should have never been attorney general, was not qualified. He's not mentally qualified to be attorney general. He was the biggest problem."
"I lost confidence in Bill Barr long before the 2020 Presidential Election Scam . . . He was afraid, weak, and frankly, now that I see what he is saying, pathetic . . . We caught them but unfortunately didn’t have an Attorney General who was capable of acting and wouldn’t go against his friends in Washington D.C. . . . Barr was a swamp creature." -Donald Trump, June 29, 2021
"I’m not a fan of General Milley" - Donald Trump, June 28, 2021
When Milley refused to execute an unlawful order, Trump yelled at him that he was in “f—-ing charge!” which led Milley to snap back, “Well, I’m not in charge!”. Trump then retorted “You can’t f—-ing talk to me like that!” Leading Milley to appeal to the “room of lawyers” to “inform” the president of his “legal responsibilities.” Attorney General Bill Barr then informed Trump that Milley was “right”.
"[Miley] got his job only because the world’s most overrated general, James Mattis, could not stand him, had no respect for him, and would not recommend him. To me the fact that Mattis didn’t like him, just like Obama didn’t like him and actually fired Milley, was a good thing, not a bad thing. I often act counter to people's advice who I don’t respect. - Trump, July 15, 2021
This was in reaction to revelations that Miley thought Trump was going to conduct a coup to remain in power.
"They may try, but they're not going to f****** succeed," Milley told his deputies, according to the book, I Alone Can Fix It. "You can't do this without the military. You can't do this without the CIA and the FBI. We're the guys with the guns."
"In any event, I lost respect for Milley when we walked together to St. John’s Church (which was still smoldering from a Radical Left fire set the day before), side by side, a walk that has now been proven to be totally appropriate—and the following day Milley choked like a dog in front of the Fake News when they told him they thought he should not have been walking with the President, which turned out to be incorrect" - Trump, July 15, 2021
Note: Trump only fired his generals, unlike Hitler who executed at least 84.
Hitler derided his generals:
General Field Marshall Wilhelm List, commander of Army Group A - one of three groups in the three million-man eastern campaign - was a "flabby leader."
Colonel-General Franz Halder, chief of staff of the army, was a man who "cannot decide if an attack is to be made with 100 men, with six battalions or two divisions" and then stated Halder had spent World War I in an office "sitting on that same swivel stool."
Field Marshall Wilhelm Keitel "you know he has the brains of a movie usher ... (but he was made the highest-ranking officer in the Army) ... because the man’s as loyal as a dog".
They both (almost) had their birthday celebrated as an official holiday:
Hitler’s birthday was turned into a major German holiday between 1933 and 1945.
At Pope Pius XII's express wish, Archbishop Cesare Orsenigo, the Berlin nuncio, hosted a gala reception in honor of Hitler’s 50th birthday. A birthday greeting to the Führer from the bishops of Germany would become an annual tradition until the war’s end. - John Cromwell, Vanity Fair, Oct 29, 2013
Trump's birthday (Jun 14) was proposed as "Donald J. Trump Day", a state holiday in Ohio.
Two Republican representatives from Ohio, Jon Cross, and Reggie Stoltzfus, say that having a "Donald Trump Day" would allow them to "celebrate one of the greatest presidents in American history," and to "recognize the accomplishments of his administration." - Irish Post, Feb 01, 2021
Sen. Wendy Rogers (R-District 6) has introduced a bill in the Arizona Senate that would proclaim June 14 each year as “President Donald J. Trump Day.
June 14 is also Flag Day in the United States.
They both pulled their countries out of international organizations:
Hitler pulled Germany out of the League of Nations:
Though via propaganda "assuring them that Germany was still committed to a policy inspired by the most sincere desire for peace and international understanding."
Trump during the middle of the Covid pandemic withdrew the U.S. from the World Health Organization (WHO):
"The World Health Organization let the world down ... There have [sic] to be consequences to this” - Mike Pence, July 06, 2020
They both surrounded themselves with incompetent "yes" men and sycophants:
Trump was surrounded by Michael "Plea Bargain" Flynn, Kellyanne "Alternative Facts" Conway, Sean "Largest audience to ever witness an inauguration — period — both in person and around the globe" Spicer, Steve "Sloppy Steve" Bannon, Anthony "Eleven Days" Scaramucci, Michael "the fixer" Cohen, Omarosa "no last name required", Stephen "The powers of the president will not be questioned” Miller, etc.
Hitler was surrounded by Gorring, Goebbels, Himmler, Udet, Zeitzler, Keitel, etc.
General Kurt Zeitzler was promoted to General der Infanterie and simultaneously appointed Chief of the OKH General Staff, replacing Franz Halder (fired and later arrested by Hitler). Hitler had been impressed by Zeitzler's optimistic and vigorous reports and chose him over several higher-ranked and more senior officers. Albert Speer states Hitler wanted a reliable assistant who "doesn't go off and brood on my orders, but energetically sees to carrying them out." - Albert Speer (1995). Inside the Third Reich, London: Weidenfeld & Nicolson. p. 333.
On July 01, 1944, Zeitzler suffered a nervous breakdown. Hitler never spoke to him again and had him dismissed from the Army in January 1945, refusing him the right to wear a uniform
After he forced the Commander in Chief of the German Army, General Fritsch to resign, Hitler made himself Commander in Chief of the German Army. He chose General Keitel as his Chief of Staff because he knew he was a pliable yes-man.
Field Marshall Blomberg has dismissed Keitel as "nothing more than the man who runs my office", to which Hitler replied, "That's exactly the man I'm looking for."- Anthoney Read, The Devil's Disciples, (2005), pg 453.
They both enthusiastically received saccharine, over the top bombastic praise from subordinates:
Trump:
“It’s been a great honor traveling with you around the country for the past year, and an even greater honor to be serving you on your Cabinet . . .” - Steve Mnunchin,
"It is the greatest privilege of my life to serve as the vice president to a president who is keeping his word to the American people.” - Mike Pence
"I apologize for being late for work. For about four months, I got bogged down in that swamp you’ve been trying to drain." - Robert Lighthizer
"Thank you, President Trump, for allowing us to have you as our President and to make America great again." - Diane Black (R-TN)
"On behalf of the entire senior staff around you, Mr. President, we thank you for the opportunity and the blessing that you’ve given us to serve your agenda." - Reince Priebus
" . . . against the advice of many of his other advisers, he immediately imposed a travel ban on China on the 30th, two days later. It was a profile in courage." - Robert O’Brien (National Security Advisor)
"He’s worked, like, probably as hard or harder than anybody, other than maybe Mike Pence or me." - Trump, Mar 19, 2020
"D.C. had no problems last night. Many arrests. Great job done by all. Overwhelming force. Domination. Likewise, Minneapolis was great (thank you President Trump!). - Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 2, 2020
"We are celebrating the anniversary, 75 years of D-Day. This is the time where we should be celebrating our President." - Ronna Romney (RNC Chairwoman), June 05, 2019
Hitler:
"We always approve everything our Führer does." - Herman Göring, Jul 13, 1934
"All of us, who are members of the Germanic peoples, can be happy and thankful that once in thousands of years fate has given us, from among the Germanic peoples, such a genius, a leader, our Fuehrer Adolf Hitler, and you should be happy to be allowed to work with us." - Heinrich Himmler
Fellow citizens! I believe it is time to portray to the entire nation the man Hitler, with all the magic of his personality, all the mysterious genius and irresistible power of his personality. There is probably no one left on the planet who does not know him as a statesman and as a remarkable popular leader." - Joseph Goebbels, 1935
They (and their followers) both thought they had absolute power:
Trump:
"When somebody is the president of the United States, the authority is total. And that's the way it's got to be. It's total, it's total." - Trump, April 13, 2020
"The president of the United States has the authority to do, what the president has the authority to do, which is very powerful. The presidents of the United States calls the shots." - Trump, April 13, 2020
"Well, make no mistake about it . . . in the long history of this country, the authority of the president of the United States during national emergencies is unquestionably plenary." - Mike Pence, April 13, 2020
"the powers of the president to protect our country are very substantial and will not be questioned." - Stephen Miller, Feb 12, 2017 (Face the Nation).
Hitler:
“I will tolerate no opposition. We recognize only subordination – authority downwards and responsibility upwards." - Adolf Hitler, May 1931
“The great strength of the totalitarian state is that it forces those who fear it to imitate it.” - Adolf Hitler, September 1933
“It is nonsense to suppose that a people wants to rule itself. It always comes to such ideas only when it is badly ruled.” - Joseph Goebbels, September 1933
“There is no need for a constitution regulating the conduct of the affairs of state. One thing suffices in the National Socialist state: a fanatical will based, on faith in the Fuhrer.” - Dr. Hans Lammers, Secretary of the Chancellery, October 1934
"If the Führer calls and commands, each of us must obey without question, whatever he may say. With the Führer we are everything, without him we are nothing." - Hermann Göring
They both forced out their most effective and competent commanders:
They were both teetotalers⁴:
Trump didn't drink alcohol at all.
Hitler rarely drank except for beer or wine on social occasions.
They both had a similar sense of humor:
Trump:
"And then I see the disinfectant where it knocks it out in a minute. One minute. And is there a way we can do something like that, by injection inside or almost a cleaning? " - April 23, 2021
"Hillary believes it's vital to deceive the people by having one public policy. And a totally different policy in private. That's OK, I don't know who they're angry at, Hillary, you or I? For example, here she is tonight in public, pretending not to hate Catholics.” - Oct 20, 2016 (Al Smith Dinner)
“Thankfully, Bread and Butter have been specially raised to remain calm under any condition, which will be very important because they’ve already received subpoenas to appear in Adam Schiff’s basement on Thursday, it’s true. Hundreds of people have.” - Nov 26, 2019 (while pardoning the Thanksgiving turkeys named "Bread" and "Butter".)
Hitler:
"I cannot state for a fact that Hitler had a sense of humor. I never heard him laugh out loud. That may be because I did not know him until after the war began. The Old Campaigners [those who had been with Hitler before he came to power] told me that the warlord Hitler was a quite different personality to the pre-war Hitler. ‘The boss’ himself had a small fund of jokes, which he liked to bring out from time to time." Rochus Misch, a member of the Führerbegleitkommando (Führer Escort Command; FBK).
A rather unimaginative sexist joke relating to his dog Blondi.
A Hitler favorite being: “Mrs. Goering came into the bed-chamber and found her husband waving his Field Marshall‘s baton over his underwear. “‘Hermann, darling, what are you doing?‘ she enquired "'I am promoting my underpants to overpants!'"
Another time Hitler and his henchmen roared with laughter all night long after "The Boss" cracked jokes about concentration camp inmates.
Hitler had a tendency to make fun of and mock others, including their deaths (General Hellmuth Stieff, for example, who was executed for his part in the 20 July plot to kill Hitler).
They both were fastidious about their diet:
Trump's diet largely consisted of fried foods, fast food (McDonald's was a personal favorite), well-done streak, twelve Diet Cokes a day, everything covered in ketchup.
Two scoops of ice cream for dessert (all other guests only received one). - Eater, May 11, 2017
His preferred order, according to former campaign manager Corey Lewandowski, is "a full McDonald’s dinner of two Big Macs, two Filet-O-Fish sandwiches, and a small chocolate shake – a total of 2,430 calories.” Trump spoke to CNN host Anderson Cooper about his order, saying: “It’s great stuff." - Culture Trip, May 29, 2019
"Trump had White House staff recreate McDonald’s, but it wasn’t a happy meal" - NY Daily News, Nov 08, 2017
"Egg McMuffins were often the order in the morning, or two Quarter-Pounders and a large fries later in the day."
Hitler was a strict vegetarian from 1937 until his death in 1945 (though he did make an exception for liver dumplings).
By the end of WWII, Hitler ate only mashed potatoes and clear broth. - The Independent, Nov 16, 2015
Hitler was also fond of sugary snacks. He enjoyed pastries, sweets, and — at one stage — consumed two pounds of chocolate per day. Sometimes, he would even abandon a conference to eat some chocolate in private. - History of Yesterday, May 6, 2020
Despite Hitler’s indulgences, he was always careful not to overdo it. He believed gaining too much weight would ruin his public image and damage his appeal. - History of Yesterday, May 6, 2020
They both had serious health issues:
Trump was obese, suffered from high cholesterol, and had a skin condition called rosacea.
"You know the guy does not eat well" - Reverend Franklin Graham, Jr, Axios on HBO
Besides taking a statin to lower elevated blood cholesterol, and antibiotics to control a skin condition called rosacea, he takes the prostate-related drug Propecia (finasteride) to grow scalp hair. - Medicinenet.com
Hitler suffered from numerous and growing ailments: Colitis (which probably represented irritable bowel syndrome and included constipation and diarrhea), a mild kidney condition, a problem with a leg injury suffered during World War I, an arteriosclerotic heart disease, and Parkinson`s disease.
They both did not believe in exercise:
Trump believed that exercise was misguided:
Trump considered exercise a waste of energy. "Trump believed the human body was like a battery, with a finite amount of energy, which exercise only depleted. So he didn't work out." He also stated, "All my friends who work out all the time, they’re going for knee replacements, hip replacements—they’re a disaster."
Working on the second floor of the West Wing allowed aides to avoid dealing with President Donald Trump because he never walked up the stairs to get to the upper floor. Michael Wolff, Landslide: The Final Days of the Trump Presidency
Hitler had no known exercise regimen.
They both were very concerned about being poisoned:
They both had distinctive relationships with books:
Trump may never have read one, as one of his ghostwriters once said “I seriously doubt that Trump has ever read a book straight through in his adult life.” Though according to one of his ex-wives he owns a book of Hitler's speeches, My New Order.
Hitler read one every day.
They both started their day at the same time:
Trump's first meeting of the day, "usually around 11 or 11:30 a.m.", was often an intelligence briefing or a 30-minute meeting with the chief of staff.
"Hitler gets up at about 11 or 11:30 in the morning. Half an hour later the first reports and briefings are given to him in the operations room of the Führerhauptquartier. At approx 1400 he eats a frugal meal and then takes his post-prandial nap of about an hour’s duration. He again returns to the operations room and continues to receive reports, briefings; various plans are discussed."
They both planned grandiose architecture⁵ that they never were able to complete:
Trump planned the National Garden of American Heroes that would honor Americans he deemed appropriate. The initial list he personally generated did not include Native Americans. His revised list included Alex Trebek, Johnny Appleseed, Cy Young, Kobe Bryant, Sam Walton, and Frank Sinatra.
Hitler planned a Nazi renewal of the German capital Berlin. It would be called Germania and was personally designed by Hitler with his personal architect Albert Speer. Some of which were completed in time for his 50th birthday, but most of which were never completed due to WWII.
They both coveted ownership of a significant portion of the Kingdom of Denmark:
Trump sometime in 2019 discussed the desire to purchase Greenland from the Kingdom of Denmark with senior advisers.
When the Wall Street Journal reported on Trump's desires in August 2019, Greenland's Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Greenlandic representatives in the Parliament of Denmark, the Prime Minister of Denmark, the previous Prime Minister of Denmark and de facto leader of the opposition coalition, and all members of other parties, from the far-left Red–Green Alliance to the far-right Danish People's Party all rejected a sale. Statements ranged from simple diplomatic comments that "Greenland is not for sale", to strong refusals calling the idea of a sale of Greenland and its people "completely ridiculous". Some politicians suggested that Trump's proposal to buy Greenland had to be a joke. The Prime Minister said "This is an absurd discussion", as "Greenland is not for sale. Greenland is not Danish. Greenland is Greenlandic"
Trump then canceled a planned state visit to Denmark and commented "I thought that the prime minister's statement that it was absurd, that it was an absurd idea, was nasty," He then added: "She's not talking to me. She's talking to the United States of America. You don't talk to the United States that way, at least under me."
He subsequently tweeted about Denmark's small GDP and defense spending and then about how he would not build a Trump tower on Greenland.
Hitler ordered the invasion of Denmark on April 09, 1940 (Operation Weserübung – Süd) and then occupied the country for the next five years.
They both were very interested in what the media had to say about them:
Trump:
"I watch some of the shows, I watch Liz McDonald. She’s fantastic. I watch Fox Business. I watched Lou Dobbs last night. Sean Hannity last night. Tucker [Carlson] last night. Laura [Ingraham]. I watched Fox & Friends in the morning. You watch these shows. You don’t have to go too far into the details, they cover things that are—it’s really an amazing thing." - Trump, Sep 10, 2020
Hitler didn't do much before lunch but read what the newspapers had to say about him, with press cuttings being dutifully delivered to him by his press chief. He was obsessed with the media and celebrity, writing to a friend "I believe my life is the greatest novel in world history". - Publicism
Though civilians both exclusively dressed in a "uniform" during the last four years in office:
Trump wore during his presidency almost exclusively an ill-fitting blue suit with red, blue, or red & blue tie and an American flag lapel pin, or a polo shirt, bearing "his" coat of arms.
"It comes down to fit as ever. His suits are cut too big, with absurdly wide pant legs, and sleeves too long. It makes the whole ensemble look cheap, just as his fire engine red ties [which] are frequently much too long and hang between his legs. But it's not all about fit. He doesn't take great care of his suits, either. He often wears them wrinkled, an effect lightly increased by the lighter fabrics he prefers to wear." - Business Insider, Nov 4, 2016.
Hitler, during the last six years of his regime (actually from September 1, 1939, onwards), wore exclusively a well-tailored field grey uniform of the German army, because he considered himself as the first soldier.
Traudl Junge, one of Hitler's secretaries from 1942 till the end of the war, recalls in her memoirs Until the Final Hour, "He was wearing his usual black trousers, double-breasted field-grey coat, white shirt, and black tie. I never saw him in anything else. His jacket was always perfectly plain, with silver buttons, but no braid or decorations. He just wore the golden Party badge on the left side of his chest, the Iron Cross, and the black decoration for the wounded.
"I was convinced that of all the millions on whom the Hitler Myth had fastened itself, the most carried away was Adolf Hitler, himself."
-Howard K. Smith, The Last Train from Berlin
The Leader with Flag
¹ The Independence Party is a political party in the state of New York, that has previously endorsed Michael Bloomberg for New York Coty mayor in 2001, Ralf Nader for president in 2004, Bloomberg again for mayor in 2005, and Eliot Spizter (D) for N.Y. Governor in 2006.
² Bavaria was the founding state of the Nazi party, with Munich being its nerve center.
The Nazis created the first concentration camp at Dachau, 10 miles northwest of the city.
The Beer Hall Putsch to place in Munich, which though unsuccessful put Hitler and the Nazis on the map politically.
Because of its importance to the rise of Nazism, the Nazis called Munich the Hauptstadt der Bewegung ("Capital of the Movement").
The Nazi Party headquarters were in Munich and many Führerbauten ("Führer-buildings") were built around the Königsplatz, some of which have survived to this day.
Two Honor Temples (Ehrentempel) were erected at the east side of the Königsplatz in severe neo-Greek style to echo the architecture of the older buildings; they"enshrined" the remains of the sixteen Nazis killed in the 1923 Beer Hall Putsch, who were worshipped by Nazis as martyrs. Both temples were demolished by the US Army in 1947,
During the Night of the Long Knives in 1934, when Hitler eliminated potential political rivals. Ernst Röhm was killed in Munich's Stadelheim Prison.
The Czech Sudetenland was ceded to Germany as a result of the Munich Agreement in 1938.
Munich was heavily damaged by Allied bombing, out of proportion to its strategic value. Some say due to its connection with the Nazi Party . . . it was personal.
³ Clicking one's heels while addressing The Leader and exclaiming "Heil, Hitler" is just plain wrong. Germans greeted each other by exclaiming "Heil Hitler". If a German was lucky enough to actually meet Hitler he would exclaim "Heil, mein Führer!".
⁴ A person who abstains from alcohol might choose tea as his or her alternative beverage, but the word teetotaler has nothing to do with tea. More likely, the "tee" that begins the word teetotal is a reduplication of the letter "t" that begins total, emphasizing that one has pledged total abstinence. In the early 1800s, ''tee-total'' and ''tee-totally'' were used to intensify ''total'' and ''totally'' much the way we now might say, ''I'm tired with a capital T.'' ''I am now … wholly, solely, and teetotally absorbed in Wayne's business,'' wrote the folklorist Parson Weems in an 1807 letter. Teetotal and teetotaler first appeared with their current meanings in 1834, eight years after the formation of the American Temperance Society.
⁵ Apparently designing grandiose architecture that is never to be built is a far-right, ultranationalist meme:
Glenn Beck also wants to build his own city, which in his own words will be called "Independence, USA . . . an entire city developed around patterns . . . there's not going to be a GAP here, no Ann Taylor . . . we plan on redesigning the July 4th holiday to get it away from hots dogs, and Born in the U.S.A., and fireworks and beer."
Survivalists are planning to build a city called Citadel in Idaho that would be a "Community of Liberty". There would be no leader, with groups of equals involved . . . each bringing their own professional skills and life experiences to the community.
The Citadel would be located in Benewah County, ID about an hour south of where the Aryan Nation previously operated a compound.
